“Ten guests, one storm, and a butler who really should’ve mentioned the trapdoor.”
Verdict: Case Dismissed.
Mom’s take: Gorgeous atmosphere, a genuinely creepy manor, and then the mystery just sort of gives up on itself in the last act. The trapdoor is introduced with so much fanfare and then resolved in a single throwaway line. I wanted to shake the author.
Daughter’s take: I was living for the vibes for two hundred pages and then felt completely cheated by the ending. The hype was a marketing budget, not a book. Save your money, save your shelf space.
The butler knows more than he’s telling, and the house has secrets older than the family it keeps. Unfortunately the payoff never shows up. Case dismissed.
